As the international honor society of two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa has recognized academic excellence since 1918 and has become the largest and one of the most prestigious honor societies of higher education. More than 1.2 million members have been inducted at 1,200 colleges in the United States, Canada, and Japan.

Phi Theta Kappa Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. Invitation to membership may be extended only by the local chapter at the institution at which a student is enrolled. To be eligible, one must be enrolled in a regionally accredited institution offering an associate degree program; one must have completed at least 12 hours of course work leading to an associate degree, and one must have reached a GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
