Chaparral Singers Trip to Washington D.C.

Vicki Pennington, Vernon College music instructor, and the Chaparral Singers sang in concert at Rockville, Maryland, March 29, at the historic F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. The concert included two original pieces by a contemporary British composer of great stature, John Rutter. Along with one-hundred other voices from Nevada, New York, Florida, and Texas, the Singers performed "Feel the Spirit," a collection of spirituals, directed by Dr. Will Kesling and accompanied by the thirty-two member National Chamber Orchestra.

The Chaparral Singers heard the National Symphony Orchestra, directed by Leonard Slatkin, at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The orchestra played Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43 followed by The Violin Concerto composed by Edgar Meyer for and played by solo violinist, Hilary Hahn. Soprano soloist Linda Hohenfeld completed the concert with Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G major.

The Chaparral Singers also visited historical sites in Washington, D. C. Congressman Mac Thornberry’s office provided a personalized tour of the U. S. Capitol for the VC students. Among the sites visited by the VC students were the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, several of the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Monument, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Viet Nam Veterans Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and Washington Monument.

Chaparral Singers making the trip were Crystal Vidaurri, Monica Vidaurri, Veronica Medina, Valesha Powell, Rickey Santellana, Allison Schotte, and Winona Smith. Accompanying the group were Lupe Santellana, Maria Medina, Sheila White, Bobbie White, Lois Willis, and Sylvia Mahoney.
