Vernon College barrel racer Tiffani Burton was awarded the Horse of the Year for her barrel horse at the College National Finals Rodeo held at Casper, Wyoming, June 13-17. Tiffani placed third in the nation in the barrel race and third in the Rookie of the Year final results.

Each of the eleven regions submit the name of a horse to be considered for the award. A committee at the CNFR selected the winner after watching the horses compete at the CNFR. Along with the award, the American Quarter Horse Association presented a saddle to Burton at the awards ceremony after the final performance of the CNFR.

Burton finished third in the barrel racing average about half of a second behind first place. Her time on four runs was 64.48 seconds. Her mare T.J. is a seven year old that Burton bought when the mare was two-years-old. Burton trained her to run barrels.

Coach Bobby Scott said that both Vernon College athletes that qualified for the CNFR--Burton and calf roper Matt Shiozawa plan to return to VC for another year.
