Subject searches allow you to find a work by means of a topic, person, or place that the work is about.
In addition, subject searches allow you to find works in a particular format (atlases, encyclopedias, large
print books, audiobooks, etc.) or genre (western stories, fantasy fiction, etc.). When searching
by subject, you should use Library of Congress subject headings, an established list of standardized
terminology for use in the indexing and retrieval of information.

Click on Browse the Catalog, select "Subjects" in the "Browse" listbox, type in your term(s), and
click on "Search".
An alphabetical listing of subjects in the catalog is displayed, beginning with the heading most
closely matching your search term:
In this example it can be seen that "paramedics" is not a Library of Congress subject heading, and the user
is directed to the standardized terminology.

If browsing for an appropriate subject heading for your topic is unsuccessful, you may find it helpful to
search subjects or titles that contain your search term, locate a record that is relevant to your topic,
and view the subject heading(s) assigned to that work.
Click on Search the Catalog, select "Titles" and "Subjects" in the "Find" listbox, choose the search
option "contain", type in your term(s), and click on "Search". If more than one term is entered, all terms
must be part of the same heading, but the order of the terms is irrelevant. Only those headings with data
matching every term you enter will be retrieved. To search as a phrase, enclose your terms in quotes.

Once you have located a relevant record, look at the subject headings assigned to that work. Select the
hypertext link for the desired subject heading as illustrated below to retrieve all the records with that
subject heading.
