Vernon College men’s and women’s rodeo teams each won a 2003 national team championship and made National Intercollegiate Rodeo history. Four teams have won dual championships the same year, but VC is the first two-year school to win both team championships the same year. Jackie Hobbs won the breakaway roping championship and Cade Swor, the reserve calf roping championship. Sterling Smith won Rookie of the Year, and his roping horse won the AQHA Horse of the Year award.

VC cowgirls making college rodeo team history were Hobbs, Tessie McMullan, Laura Hyde, Shy-Anne Bowden, and Kelcey Foreman. The ladies had 500 points with Weber State University coming in 2nd with 415 points.Hobbs won her roping championship with a consistent 2.4, 2.7, 2.5, and 2.6. McMullan finished 10th. Foreman finished 4th in the nation in goat tying. McMullan was 14th, and she was 4th in the all-around. Hyde claimed 9th place with a time of 60.29 on four barrel runs. The champion’s time was 59.38. Hyde’s horse Remedy A Badger was 3rd in competition for the AQHA Horse of the Year award. Hyde finished 4th for the Rookie of the Year award.

Vernon College cowboys on the winning team were Swor, Smith, Will Lowe, E.P. Luchsinger, Marty Eakin, Jesse Kirby, and Cal White. VC accumulated 827.5 points with 2nd place University of Wyoming having 592.5 points. Smith won the Rookie of the Year award by earning 295 points. Eakin was 5th place rookie, and Luchsinger, 12th. Smith’s 295 points earned his horse McConnell Star the saddle for American Quarter Horse Association Horse of the Year.

Swor won the short round in calf roping with an 8 flat run for a total average time of 35.4 on four head with the champion having a time of 34.9. Smith placed 3rd in the nation in calf roping with an average of 36.6 after going into the short round in first place.

Eakin placed 5th in the nation in steer wrestling with a 22.2 on four head, and Luchsinger placed 11th in the nation. Lowe was 11th in bareback. Kirby placed 13th in saddle bronc riding and Eakin, 27th.
