"History is to the nation rather as memory is to an individual. As an individual deprived of memory becomes disoriented and lost, not knowing where he or she has been or where he or she is going, so a nation that forgets its past will be disabled in dealing with its present and its future. History is, in an ultimate sense, an impossiblity. The past is past---and beyond recovery. Objectivity is an illusion. Historians are enlisted in a doomed expedition to attain the unobtainable. We are accutely conscious of our limitations, for we know that we are prisoners of our own times and our own experiences. New times bring new contexts and new perspectives---and new histories. The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it. This is the endless fascination of historical enterprise: the search to reconstruct what went before, a quest illuminated by those ever changing contexts that continually place old questions in new light. History is indeed an argument without end. This is, I believe, why historians love it so much."Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

I am the son of Larry and Laura Holmes who are both retired educators and my dad is also an Air Force and Navy veteran. My parents were born and raised in Mississippi and the older I have become the more I realize that I am truly a grandson of the South. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, I spent my early years in Kansas and moved to Texas at the age of eleven. My family spent many a holiday visiting kinfolk in Mississippi. I attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and then spent almost fifteen years playing in government and politics. Due to what is probably a genetic defect, I entered the field of education and eventually obtained my Master's degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce. In addition, I am extremely proud to have the very important title of "Uncle Larry" to two incredibly adorable, beautiful, charming, sweet and almost-perfect nieces, Haley and Whitney. Haley is 22 years old and is a senior at Texas A&M University. Whitney is 17 years old and is a high school junior. I constantly remind them that they are still my babies.
I am an avid country music fan with tastes that favor Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. I am a prolific reader and I am also a CNN/History Channel/CSPAN junkie. I enjoy watching my students on the Vernon College teams compete in baseball, rodeo, softball and volleyball.
