NIRA National Champion Summary

2003 NIRA National & Regional Champions

Vernon College mens and womens rodeo teams each won a 2003 national team championship and made National Intercollegiate Rodeo history. Four teams have won dual championships the same year, but VC is the first two-year school to win both team championships the same year. Jackie Hobbs won the breakaway roping championship and Cade Swor, the reserve calf roping championship. Sterling Smith won Rookie of the Year, and his roping horse won the AQHA Horse of the Year award.

VC cowgirls making college rodeo team history were Hobbs, Tessie McMullan, Laura Hyde, Shy-Anne Bowden, and Kelcey Foreman. The ladies had 500 points with Weber State University coming in 2nd with 415 points.Hobbs won her roping championship with a consistent 2.4, 2.7, 2.5, and 2.6. McMullan finished 10th. Foreman finished 4th in the nation in goat tying. McMullan was 14th, and she was 4th in the all-around. Hyde claimed 9th place with a time of 60.29 on four barrel runs. The champions time was 59.38. Hydes horse Remedy A Badger was 3rd in competition for the AQHA Horse of the Year award. Hyde finished 4th for the Rookie of the Year award.

Vernon College cowboys on the winning team were Swor, Smith, Will Lowe, E.P. Luchsinger, Marty Eakin, Jesse Kirby, and Cal White. VC accumulated 827.5 points with 2nd place University of Wyoming having 592.5 points. Smith won the Rookie of the Year award by earning 295 points. Eakin was 5th place rookie, and Luchsinger, 12th. Smiths 295 points earned his horse McConnell Star the saddle for American Quarter Horse Association Horse of the Year.

Swor won the short round in calf roping with an 8 flat run for a total average time of 35.4 on four head with the champion having a time of 34.9. Smith placed 3rd in the nation in calf roping with an average of 36.6 after going into the short round in first place.

Eakin placed 5th in the nation in steer wrestling with a 22.2 on four head, and Luchsinger placed 11th in the nation. Lowe was 11th in bareback. Kirby placed 13th in saddle bronc riding and Eakin, 27th.

2002 Champion Team

Vernon College slipped past 14 other schools to capture the men's rodeo team championship for the Southwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. The final rodeo of the 10-rodeo season was held at Tarleton State University on April 25-27. VC Coach Bobby Scott had seven cowboys and three cowgirls qualify for the Conference Finals Rodeo at Hobbs, New Mexico, on May 23-26, which gives them a shot at making the College National Finals Rodeo in June. Will Lowe's regional championship in bareback riding gave him a berth at the Conference Finals Rodeo and the College National Finals Rodeo. Bull rider Cal White's second place in the region earned him the same ticket as Lowe's to the CFR and CNFR.

To win the championship, VC accumulated 2020 points for the season followed by Western Texas College with 2002.5 points. VC, coming from behind to win by a slim margin of 17.5 points, placed 3rd at the final rodeo winning 260 points while WTC earned 182.5 points for a 4th place at the final rodeo.

To qualify for the CFR, the contestants had to place in the top ten in an event. VC cowboys who qualified for the CFR are Lowe, Gardner, Kansas; White, Springtown; Brady Brock, Springtown, 3rd in calf roping and 8th in steer wrestling; Cade Swor, Winnie, 4th in calf roping; Jesse Kirby, Dodge City, Kansas, 5th saddle bronc riding; Jeremy Watson, Roanoke, 8th in bull riding; and Zach Dickens, Farmersville, 8th in bareback riding. The cowgirls, headed for the CFR, are Tessie McMullan, Bronte, 10th in breakaway roping and 6th in goat tying; Jody Gray, Seymour, 6th / 7th place split in breakaway roping, and Jaclyn Hobbs, Sallisaw, Okla., 5th in goat tying. The top seven in each event at the CFR will have a chance at a national championship at Casper, Wyoming, on June 11-15 at the CNFR.

2000 CNFR 3rd Place Barrel Racing

Vernon College barrel racer Tiffani Burton was awarded the Horse of the Year for her barrel horse at the College National Finals Rodeo held at Casper, Wyoming, June 13-17. Tiffani placed third in the nation in the barrel race and third in the Rookie of the Year final results.

Each of the eleven regions submit the name of a horse to be considered for the award. A committee at the CNFR selected the winner after watching the horses compete at the CNFR. Along with the award, the American Quarter Horse Association presented a saddle to Burton at the awards ceremony after the final performance of the CNFR.

Burton finished third in the barrel racing average about half of a second behind first place. Her time on four runs was 64.48 seconds. Her mare T.J. is a seven year old that Burton bought when the mare was two-years-old. Burton trained her to run barrels.

Coach Bobby Scott said that both Vernon College athletes that qualified for the CNFR--Burton and calf roper Matt Shiozawa plan to return to VC for another year.
