The College’s Vision, General Education Philosophy Statement, and Core Values add further definition to the institution’s mission.

Vision: Vernon College will promote a culture of success for our students and communities.

General Education Philosophy at Vernon College: General education at Vernon College reflects the institution’s deep conviction that successful, satisfying lives require a wide range of skills and knowledge. We are dedicated to providing educational opportunities that develop the academic, career, and personal capabilities of individuals so they may achieve self-fulfillment and participate fully and positively in a democratic society. Vernon College accepts the charge of providing a college atmosphere free of bias, in which students can exercise initiative and personal judgment, leading to a greater awareness of personal self-worth. We strive to provide every student with opportunities to develop the tools necessary to become a contributing, productive member of society. General education, in essence, augments and rounds out the specialized training students receive in their majors and cultivates a knowledgeable, informed, literate human being.

Core Values Guiding Vernon College: Our values define who we are and guide us in conducting our business every day. Our values are what are important to us at our college.

Accessibility: We strive to maintain open lines of communication and are available in person and/or electronically at all times for our stakeholders’ convenience.

Accountability: With renowned integrity and ethical standing, we back our words and actions; support our product, community, and stakeholders; and are responsible good stewards of our fiscal resources.

Building Relationships: We recognize the central importance of building human relationships.  We understand that relationships between and among people are an important vehicle for change. We engage people as partners and seek to strengthen relationships among people in a purposeful effort to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of individuals, families, organizations, and communities.

Diversity: We embrace with sensitivity a wide range of cultures and ideas within our diverse environment, celebrating the differences among our faculty, staff, and students without regard to gender, age, or disabilities.

Innovation: Employing forward-thinking and future-oriented methods, we strive to be at the forefront of designing new processes and methods that are flexible and creative.

Leadership: We strive to be leaders in our college and communities and to grow leaders for our college and our communities. Choosing to serve others takes hard work and some sacrifice. It involves being committed and acting responsibly. It reflects an awareness of the needs of others, awareness of the challenges, an enthusiasm for improving things and creating new things. It demonstrates a desire to give back and to make a difference.

Quality: We strive to do our best with everything entrusted to us and we take pride in the successful completion of the job.

Student Success: Every aspect of what we do adds value to the education of our students.  We have established a foundation of teaching methods that work, and we set high standards of achievement.

Teamwork: We are the catalyst that transforms and inspires people to reach their greatest potential TOGETHER. We do this by developing targeted learning experiences that engage people, empower leaders, and accelerate team development within our college and our communities.

The mission statement is specific to Vernon College in that the Planning and Assessment Committee and the President’s Council review it at the beginning of the yearly planning process. The Board of Trustees adopted the current mission statement in January of 2005.

The mission statement is appropriate to the College’s role as a comprehensive, public community college, as defined by Texas Education Code: Chapter 130, Section 130.0011-Public Junior Colleges; Role and Mission. This article states, in part: “Texas public junior colleges shall be two-year institutions primarily serving their local taxing districts and service areas in Texas and offering vocational, technical, and academic courses for certification or associate degrees."

The College’s mission and vision statements address teaching and learning by stating that our mission is teaching, learning, and leading; we are a comprehensive community college that integrates education with opportunity; and that we promote a culture of success for our students and communities. Research is not addressed in the mission statement since the institution is a community college, and research is not a part of the community college mission.
