Narrative:

The mission of Vernon College embodies the comprehensive nature of a community college. Offering lifelong learning opportunities to the communities we serve, every operation within the institution is guided by the mission. The mission statement reads as follows:

The mission of Vernon College is teaching, learning, leading.

Vernon College is a comprehensive community college that integrates education with opportunity through our instructional programs and student services.

Therefore, the college will provide:

         Technical programs up to two years in length leading to associate degrees or certificates;

         Vocational programs leading directly to employment in semi-skilled and skilled occupations;

         Freshman and sophomore courses in arts and sciences, including the new core and field of study curricula leading to associate and baccalaureate degrees;

         Continuing adult education programs for occupational upgrading or personal enrichment;

         Compensatory education programs designed to fulfill the commitment of an admissions policy allowing the enrollment of disadvantaged students;

         A continuing program of counseling and guidance designed to assist students in achieving their individual educational goals;

         Workforce development programs designed to meet local and statewide needs;

         Adult literacy and other basic skills programs for adults; and

         Such other purposes may be prescribed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board or local governing boards in the best interest of post-secondary education in Texas.

The mission statement accurately guides the operation of the institution. The current mission statement was originally developed by the Strategic Planning Committee (a subcommittee of the Collegeís standing Planning and Assessment Committee), then tweaked and reviewed by the Planning and Assessment Committee and the Presidentís Council, before being approved and adopted by the Board of Trustees in January of 2005. The mission statement is reviewed at the beginning of the yearly planning process, and provides guidance in developing the College Priorities, the College budget, the College Directives and the annual goals of each planning unit.

The mission statement is appropriate to the Collegeís role as a comprehensive, public community college, as defined by Texas Education Code: Chapter 130, Section 130.0011-Public Junior Colleges; Role and Mission. This article states, in part: ďTexas public junior colleges shall be two-year institutions primarily serving their local taxing districts and service areas in Texas and offering vocational, technical, and academic courses for certification or associate degrees

Periodically, the mission is reviewed, updated, and approved by the Board of Trustees. It is reviewed annually by the Planning and Assessment Committee and the Presidentís Council. The current mission statement was officially approved and adopted by the Board of Trustees on the 19th day of January, 2005.

The Vernon College Mission Statement is communicated to the institutionís constituencies and widely published. The mission statement is published in the Vernon College General Catalog, the Vernon College Student Handbook and on our website.
