Associate Degree Nursing Philosophy

The Associate Degree Nursing Program at Vernon College is a specialized program and in alliance with the mission of Vernon College. The program reflects the role and the mission of the College by responding to the needs and aspirations of the community it serves. By its commitment to accessibility, comprehensiveness, flexibility, quality, and accountability, the Associate Degree Nursing Program strives to offer a comprehensive basic nursing curriculum which meets the needs of individuals and agencies in our college service area.

The Associate Degree Nursing Program will provide an avenue for articulation and upward mobility in nursing education. It is the purpose of the Associate Nursing Degree Program to promote excellence in professional nursing and provide assistance in supplying North Central Texas with qualified nurses who are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN to become Registered Nurses.

The Nursing Program combines studies in general education and nursing, with selected nursing experiences in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other health care facilities in Vernon and in Wichita Falls. The College nursing facility members assume responsibility for instruction and supervision of students in the clinical agencies as well as in the nursing classroom conducted on the Vernon campus.

The Nursing Department offers two tracks leading to the nursing degree:

  1. The Generic track begins in the fall semester of each year. It is designed for students who do not possess any previous nursing education. After the general education requirements are completed, the Generic track can be completed in four semesters.
  2. The LVN Transition track begins in the summer semester and is completed at the end of the following spring semester, if all general requirements are completed.
Students in the nursing program have the same privileges and responsibilities as do all students in the College. A variety of social and cultural opportunities are open to them, and they are encouraged to participate in those campus organizations and activities that are of special interest to them.
