Course Descriptions
The Automotive Technology Program is designed to provide students the working knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the fast growing, high technology world of automotive mechanics. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practice, this program trains students in such areas such as computer controls, electronics, chassis and alignment, air conditioning, and tune-up and testing. Using the most up-to-date equipment, courses in the program enable students to accomplish the following:
- Diagnose & repair air conditioning systems
- Preform two- and four-wheel alignments
- Understand an automotive electrical system
- Preform engine diagnostics and overhauls
- Learn to use scopes and other diagnostic equipment to preform tune-ups
Full-time students can expect to complete the Associate in Applied Science Degree in two years. The Certificate of Completion is a one year program. A one semester Basic Certificate is also available. Courses are also available for upgrade training.
There are numerous employment options for graduates of Vernon College's Automotive Technology Program including the following: parts personnel, line mechanic, alignment mechanic, tune-up mechanic, electronics and computer controls mechanic, or air conditioning repair personnel. The U.S. Department of Labor notes the future job opportunities for automotive mechanics are expected to be plentiful for persons who complete automotive training programs. Most persons who enter the occupation may expect steady work because changes in economic conditions have little effect on the automotive repair industry.
The Automotive Technology courses are technical in nature; however, many colleges and universities accept Vernon College's Automotive Technology courses in transfer to their programs. Students who plan to transfer to another college or university should check with that institution for transfer information.Students who have successfully completed automotive technology courses in high school may receive college credit for some work providing they enroll at Vernon College and meet articulation requirements. Counselors at both the secondary and post-secondary schools should be consulted for this type of credit.
A committee of professionals from the area meets at least twice yearly to examine the Automotive Technology Program. Their advice and input ensure that the training provided continually meets the needs of business and industry.
Vernon College offers an opportunity for responsible adults to take advantage of the courses and programs available at the College. In general, any high school graduate or other qualified individual may be admitted to the Automotive Technology Program by meeting one of the following conditions:
- Graduation from an accredited high school
- Admission by GED certificate
- Admission by transfer
- Concurrent enrollment
- Foreign student
