The VC Surgical Technology Program is a selective admission program offering a Certificate of Completion or an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree upon successful completion.
Surgical Technologist’s Role
The Surgical Technologist (ST) is an allied health professional who practices as a member of the surgical team providing safe surgical patient care with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical assistants, and registered nurses. Typical duties include:

Prepare the operating room by selecting and opening sterile supplies creating the sterile field.

Preoperative duties also include assembling, adjusting, and checking nonsterile equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order.

“Scrub in” and prepare the sterile field, instruments and supplies for the surgical procedure, gown/glove surgeon, and assist in draping the surgical site.

Maintaining the sterile field, being constantly vigilant that all members of the team adhere to aseptic technique.

Anticipate the needs of surgeon and patient, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner. The Surgical Technologist share with the Registered Nurse Circulator the responsibility of accounting for sponges, needles, and instruments before, during, and after surgery.

Responsible for preparing and applying sterile dressings following the procedure, assisting with patient transfer, and after surgery prepare the operating room for the next patient.
