The Accuplacer exam is given as a pre-assessment for the following programs at Vernon College: Police Academy (reading), and Dental Assisting or Medical Assisting (reading, sentence skills, elementary algebra). The scores will vary depending on what program you are testing for. Accuplacer is completely computerized and results are immediate. The test is untimed, but takes approximately 1.5 hours to test all three sections. If you do not pass all sections, you may re-test at any time. The fee is $30 for all three sections and $10 per section. A picture ID is mandatory to test. It can be in the form of a driver's license, student ID, military ID, or passport.
Students may wish to review basic concepts in reading, grammar, and algebra before taking Accuplacer, especially if they have been away from school for more than a year. There is an Accuplacer study app available at collegeboard.org. Many students find that a GED or THEA review book (available at the college bookstore, local bookstores and public libraries) is helpful in refreshing their basic skills.
